Global Initiatives
Shreveport Bossier – April 21, 2008 – Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the
world’s largest breast cancer organization, has announced the awarding of
more than $100 million in breast cancer research grants, representing the
largest single-year investment in research in the organization’s 26-year
history and a 30 percent increase over last year’s award total of $77
million. The 2008 grants slate moves Komen for the Cure closer to
accomplishing its goal of investing another $2 billion in breast cancer
research and community-based programs by 2017.
Shreveport Bossier City affiliate plays an integral role, along with 121
other Komen Affiliates throughout the United States, in raising funds to
support Komen’s promise to end breast cancer forever.
Komen Affiliates raise funds used to support Komen’s scientific research
grants program through locally-held Komen Race for the Cure® events or
other means such as Try it on for the Cure, Pink Night at the Rodeo, and
events partnering with local businesses.
Seventy-five percent of the funds raised by the Shreveport Bossier
affiliate stay in Northwest Louisiana supporting community breast health
programs for under-served people. A minimum of 25 percent of funds raised
by the Shreveport Bossier affiliate is contributed directly to Susan G.
Komen for the Cure’s national research grant program.
“The Shreveport Bossier Affiliate provides opportunities for everyone to
help make a significant difference in the fight against breast cancer,”
said Danielle Voumard, Executive Director. “Everyone who supports our
work by volunteering or participating in an event like the Komen Race for
the Cure® can feel good about meeting breast health needs within the area
we serve while helping to move Susan G.Komen for the Cure closer to our
vision of a world without breast cancer.”
Promise Grants Top 2008 Slate
With this year’s slate of 143 grants, Komen for the Cure has fully
activated new funding mechanisms, including Promise Grants designed to
speed the discovery and delivery of the cures for breast cancer. Promise
Grants promote collaboration between researchers and institutions while

direct investments in important research. The seven Promise Grants
awarded this year focus on estrogen negative breast cancer, inflammatory

cancer progression.
Other important research areas Komen is funding include genetic risks,
risk modulation, breast cancer stem cells, new targets for breast cancer
therapies, therapeutic vaccines, treatment resistance, the molecular
basis for chemotherapeutic response, strategies for the reduction of
tumor progression, the role of micro-environments, the role of specific
proteins in metastasis and treatments for bone metastasis.
“Since its inception, Komen has invested more than $1 billion in research
and community health programs, touching every major discovery and
advancement in breast cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment,” said
Susan G. Komen for the Cure President and CEO Hala Moddelmog. “With this
year’s grants slate, we’ve made it clear that our money will fund
scientific research that focuses on ways to significantly reduce breast
cancer incidence and mortality within the next ten years.”
