FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PINK SUNDAY… Raising awareness in Northwest Louisiana

WHO:  The Shreveport Bossier Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and local churches.

WHAT:  Pink Sunday is a grassroots effort with local churches to educate the members of their respective congregations on breast health and breast cancer. This effort is to address the high breast cancer mortality rate among women in the ten parish service area of the Shreveport Bossier Affiliate.  The affiliate will provide free breast health information packets to the churches upon request.  Any church in the affiliate service area may participate in this program. Churches also have the opportunity to celebrate survivors that day in their congregation as well as honor those who have lost their battle. Each individual church is responsible for coordinating their own event.

WHEN:  Sunday, May 18th, 2008

WHERE:  Service area includes the following parishes:

Caddo                 Bienville
          Bossier                Webster

                   Claiborne             De Soto
                   Red River            Winn
                   Sabine                 Natchitoches

WHY:  Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer found in women in the United States and the leading cause of death among women between 40 and 59 years old.  Louisiana has a higher mortality death rate from breast cancer in comparison to other states in the U.S. Early detection is the key to survival.
